Meet the Londoner- Beatriz Maldonado Carreño

Dear Bea, please tell us a bit about yourself.

Who are you?

My name is Beatriz Maldonado Carreño. I am a Colombian chef and mum of two. I’ve been in London for 11 years now and I love it!

You are originally from Colombia, what brought you to London?

I came to study a postgraduate diploma in kitchen management. The day after I arrived I knew that I had found my place in the world.

In which area of London do you live?

I live in East London, in Highams Park.

In 2018 you became chef at the What did you do before that?

I worked in different restaurants in London and then I started running supperclubs when my son was born in 2014.

Why is working at the Supperclub special?

Supperclubs are a great way to communicate with people. I get to choose, to some extent, what people eat. Most of the time we serve things that people won’t necessarily choose themselves if they had an open menu. And because everyone is eating the same thing at the same time, there’s time and space to meet people at the table, have a chat, get instant feedback, even see their faces when they are eating. That is something you don’t get in most restaurants.

How big is the team your Supperclub?

On site there’s six of us, plus a bunch of people working behind the scenes to make everything happen.

How do you choose the dishes?

Most of the dishes come from things that I (or one of the team members) like to eat. Things that bring memories from back home. We then twist them a little so they have our own signature. We serve Latin inspired dishes, not typical authentic dishes. I like to mix things up, take ingredients, techniques and flavours from different countries in Latin America and bring them together to form a new dish.

Do you offer vegetarian and vegan options as well?

We always have vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options for our menu. People just need to let us know in advance. My husband is pescatarian, so I’ve been through the struggle of going out to eat and looking at a menu that was clearly an afterthought. I promised never to do that. is open 3 times a week, how do you spend the time when not cooking?

Mainly looking after my two children. But I’m quite crafty, so there’s always a project going on in the background.

Are you open throughout the year?

We are open most weekends. We take a break at the end of the year and the peak of the summer.

What’s a must-see sight in London?

The Thames. I love it! The sight from the bridges is amazing.

Is London a foodie city?

Definitely! There’s amazing food from pretty much every corner of the world.

The best museum in London is…?

The science museum. I originally trained as an electronic engineer, so very much into science.

Where do you go for a nice lunch?

The Collab in Walthamstow. I love burgers, and definitely love theirs.

A place to find quiet and peace in busy London?

Queen Mary’s Rose Garden in Regent’s Park. You can easily forget you’re in the middle of London.

Actually, no milk. Black tea for me, with a dash of cold water at the end.

Victoria Line, it takes you very quickly to the opposite ends of the city.

Best advice you were given?

Don’t ever regret things you’ve done. If you don’t like the outcome, learn from it, but never regret.

If you are really hungry and don’t have a lot of time. What do you eat?

Pasta with basil pesto and spinach with some seeds if available. Filling, tasty and nutritious.

Your least favourite ingredient?

Cucumbers! I can’t stand them.
